 Present Research/Professional Speciality: 
  • Data analysis and interpretation of Antarctic atmospheric observations with emphasis on Antarctic ozone depletion, climate change and boundary layer chemistry. First observations of bromine explosion events in the Antarctic using the DOAS technique. 
  • Satellite validation using ground-based observations made at Antarctic and mid-latitude sites. Validation and interpretation of data from the satellite based ILAS experiment. Use of ILAS and correlative data for analysis of ozone loss in the Arctic by separating satellite measurements of ozone profiles according to dynamical tracers. 
  • Trend analysis of long-term atmospheric composition time series & interpretation of their relevance for climate change. 
  • Coastal boundary layer studies of the emissions of halogen oxides and their impact on tropospheric chemistry and particle formation. These studies have been undertaken in New Zealand, Malaysia and during ship voyages from Singapore to New Zealand and close to the New Zealand coast. 
  • Urban pollution studies with an emphasis on MAX-DOAS observations of nitrogen dioxide and its profile retrieval and boundary layer mixing ratio. 
  • Development of UV-visible spectroscopy analysis standards and measurement strategies as co-chair of the UV-visible NDACC working group. 
  • Liaison with the international atmospheric community as part of the NDACC steering committee and as GRUAN Lauder site co-representative. Development of Lauder as a GRUAN site.
Supervision of PhD students and Postdocs:
  • Monica Martinez-Aviles (NSF postdoc fellowship, 2008 – 2010): Formal supervisor. Topic: Emissions of bromine from the marine environment and its effect on stratospheric ozone. 
  • Timothy Hay  (Physics Department, University of Canterbury, 2006 – 2010): Formal co-supervisor together with Dr Adrian McDonald. Thesis topic: MAX-DOAS measurements of bromine explosion events in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica. 
  • Robyn Schofield  (School of Environmental Sciences, University of Auckland, 2000 – 2003): Formal co-supervision with Prof. David Shooter and Dr. Brian Connor. Thesis topic: The vertical distribution of atmospheric BrO from ground-based measurements.
