The 21st Century and Beyond

In recognition of the 150th anniversary of our Central Otago communities, the Mirror (a local newspaper) has begun a publication project to consider what our communities will look like in the next 150 years. They will consider issues such as:
  • Tourism
  • Water
  • Waste-water
  • Development
  • Population
  • Air Quality
  • Housing
  • Environment
  • Farming
They want to encourage local debate on this, and to reach consensus on what we can do as individuals and communities to protect and enhance the places we love.

"The only way to resolve so many of these issues is through ideas, and ideas are born of education, debate and discussion."  (Excerpt taken from an article in the Mirror, 26th March 2014, written by Debbie Jamieson, Editor).

The Mirror plans to use its connection with our communities to raise issues, increase awareness and encourage the kind of rational and constructive debate that will help us make good decisions as a community and as individuals to ensure a positive outlook for future generations.

Bodeker Scientific is very supportive of this project, and is working with Mirror editor Debbie Jamieson to help develop content for these publications. Although Bodeker Scientific is very involved in international climate research, we are becoming increasingly aware that action is more likely to be effective if it occurs at the community level. We want to stimulate community-level debate about a considered response to climate change and other external drivers of societal change.

This is what was in the first publication of the project, published on the 26th of March 2014...
