Bodeker Scientific is a research organisation recognized domestically and internationally for its expertise in atmospheric and climate research. The company operates as a federation of largely independent researchers who collaboratively work on shared contracts under a commonly agreed company constitution. About the Role

We seek a passionate, enthusiastic and energetic senior scientist, with an infinite capacity to not know what can’t be done, who is ready and willing to work in an agile and innovative research environment. This person will need to have the experience, publication record, domestic collaborative networks, and international linkages to make a significant contribution to the future success of the company. We expect the senior scientist to take on a high-level of responsibility within our small team. 

Essential skills/attributes
  1. PhD, or equivalent, in climate science (e.g. atmosphere, ocean, cryosphere, or terrestrial) 
  2. Proven leadership skills
  3. Well-developed communication skills
  4. Proven track record in leading the development of successful funding applications
  5. 20+ years research experience
  6. Strong collaborative networks across New Zealand and internationally 
  7. A demonstrated ability to think creatively
  8. Excellent organization skills, i.e. able to juggle several tasks of varying priority
Preferred Skills
  1. Strong publication record (e.g. >50 papers in the peer-reviewed literature)
  2. Ongoing collaboration with New Zealand stakeholders and/or industries
  3. Ability to work collaboratively in leading a team
  4. An imaginative approach to scientific research
  5. Experience in the development and/or use of a variety of climate models
  6. Advanced data analytics tool-box (e.g. machine-learning)
  7. >10 years of experience in programming e.g. in C++, Delphi/pascal, python, matlab or IDL
Primary responsibilities of the successful applicant, depending on their expertise, experience and skills, will include, but are not limited to: 
  1. Leading and/or managing current research projects at Bodeker Scientific
  2. Developing new and innovative funding proposals, and other forms of business development
  3. Directing and/or undertaking software development for data analysis, data display, and data manipulation 
  4. Travelling domestically and internationally to represent Bodeker Scientific’s research results and to conduct business development
  5. Mentoring members of the Bodeker Scientific team
  6. Running models and analysing model results
  7. Synthesising and writing up research results for publication
  8. Writing achievement/client reports
The candidate will be based at the Bodeker Scientific offices which are in Alexandra, New Zealand, known for its relaxed lifestyle which provides excellent opportunities for outdoor pursuits including mountain biking, kayaking, cross-country skiing in winter, rock climbing etc. It is in a central location, with easy access to popular locations such as Queenstown and Wanaka. You will be working in a friendly and collegial team on a wide range of existing research projects, as well as initiating new projects that build on your expertise and that of the rest of the group, and seeking funding to support that research.
